What are the Different Types of Braces?

March 16, 2020

Today, more than ever before, you have a number of types of braces that could be an option. While the final recommendation you receive from your dentist after a thorough examination should be the guiding force in your decision, the following offers a brief overview of the types of braces that might be offered to you.

Conventional Metal Braces

The traditional braces that have wires, bands, and brackets are the most cost-effective -- though visible -- method of correcting teeth. Their design makes it easy to alter the positioning of the braces. Using bands of different colors can make the braces look more attractive.

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces are metal like conventional braces, but use clips instead of bands to hold the wires in place. This means the braces cause less friction for the patient and are usually easier to keep clean.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces could be an alternative for those people who are self-conscious about traditional metal braces. Made of a ceramic material that more closely mimics the color of natural teeth, this type of braces can also include tooth-colored wires.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are made of metal, but they are attached to the inside surfaces of the teeth. This makes them less noticeable. However, they can also take longer to align your teeth and you might find them uncomfortable to your tongue.

Invisalign is a system of clear plastic aligners that are made especially for you to wear over your teeth. Because they are nearly invisible and allow patients to eat and drink almost anything, Invisalign is preferred by many. However, Invisalign is only effective with dental problems that are minor to moderate in nature.
