Over time, your braces are designed to shift your teeth into proper alignment, leaving you with a brilliant, beautiful smile. However, how do teeth move when using braces? Understanding how teeth move when using the attachments should give you a better understanding of what is happening behind the scenes of your new look.

The Periodontal Ligament

This ligament is where it all starts. The ligament (similar to other ligaments in joints throughout your body) is made up of collagen, which is a very specific protein. The ligaments connect the roots of your teeth to the jaw bone, which essentially anchors the teeth into place. The protein fibers connect to the teeth through something known as cementum (think of it like a cement that connects the two). The point where the ligaments connect with the jaw bone is alive protein tissue, which is not all too different from muscle tissue in the body.

A Ligament in Motion

The periodontal ligament is continually changing. This is based on several factors, including the health of your teeth, the jaw bone, and the cementum. As this shift due to health, available proteins, your age and other factors, the ligaments shift in order to constantly give you a normal bite. When you bite down on something, it creates a tension, due to the compression of the ligament. This, in turn, impacts the cementum and the ligament.

Using Nature to Improve Your Smile

Braces take advantage of how ligaments naturally shift and change throughout the course of your life. As the ligaments are continually moving, braces use this movement in order to correct the alignment of your teeth. With each bonded bracket, there is a strong and constant pull on the teeth. This constant tension tugs at the ligaments on one side while compressing the ligament on the other side. The dynamic of tension and compression causes changes in surrounding bone, allowing the teeth to shift into position.

Predictable Shifts

Braces work because the applied force allows the shift in the ligament alignment in a predictable manner. The pressure, while firm, is also subtle. This way, the teeth can shift slowly. Additionally, wires can be tightened or changed for different stiffnesses, allowing for additional tightening and corrections along the way. With this continued gradual force, teeth are allowed to shift into proper alignment.
