What Is Gum Surgery?

Gum surgery, otherwise known as periodontal surgery, is a treatment operation or procedure done when one is infected with the periodontal (gum) disease, both in moderate or advanced stages. The surgery is necessary when the infection has settled beyond the reach of manual scalers or has caused deep periodontal gaps, and the dentist needs to access, clean and treat the ailing areas. There are different types of gum surgery including, Gingival flap surgery, Gingivoplasty, Gingivectomy, and Tissue grafting. The surgeries are commonly performed under local anesthesia and they can be quick if the area being covered is not extensive.

How is Gum Surgery Conducted?

Gum/Periodontal surgery is conducted depending on the state of a patient’s gum. Here are 3 ways in which it can be conducted: Flap Surgery- If periodontal pockets are more than 5 millimeters deep, the periodontist cuts the gum tissue and separates it from the teeth before cleaning the pockets with an ultrasonic scaling device to eliminate plaque, biofilm and tartar. Gingivoplasty - If there is excess gum tissue that has overgrown on the teeth, the periodontist cuts and gets rid of the extra gum tissue. Gingivectomy -If there is gum recession (a case where the gum has pulled away from the teeth), the periodontist performs gum grafting.

When is gum surgery needed?

First, this surgery is necessary when you are experiencing gum recession. Gum recession occurs when the tissue around a tooth pulls away from the tooth and exposes it or its root. This can cause damage to the supporting bone and in time lead to tooth sensitivity or eventually tooth loss. Second, it is needed for cosmetic reasons to make people feel more comfortable with their smile. It helps reshape gum tissue around the teeth for a better look. Third and final, the surgery is important in protecting your dental health, tooth sensitivity and even helping you eat comfortably.

Love, love, love the whole staff here! I am being treated for adult orthodontic surgical braces to correct my underbite. Throughout the entire process from the initial consultation, finance/payment, greeting/exit of each appointment, and of course the talented and genuine staff that treat your teeth each time,
We were in an emergent situation after a playground accident/trauma and within 10 mins of calling and upon arrival, we were greeted, evaluated, and treated immediately on our first visit.
They are AWESOME....I make that drive from Alexandria to Fairfax to take my kid here. My kid loves that they make her feel comfortable and they are just happy and jolly.
