What are Impacted Teeth?

Teeth start to break through the through the gum first at infancy and later at the age of 7. Teeth that fail to emerge or emerges partially are known as impacted teeth. Teeth can become impacted due to overcrowding or when they become twisted, tilted, or displaced. There are three types of impacted teeth. Soft tissue impaction occurs when the tooth has penetrated through the gum, but is partially covered by the gum. Partial bony impaction occur when a tooth has broken through the gum, but is partially covered by the jawbone. Complete bony impaction occurs when the tooth is fully encased in the jaw bone.

How Are Impacted Teeth Treated?

If not treated, impacted teeth can cause decay, tissue inflammation, a bad odor, and misalignment of the entire dental structure. The first step for treatment of impaction is taking by digital x-rays to determine how problematic the tooth may become. Impacted teeth can be treated by a dental extraction, surgical repositioning, and exposure. Surgical Repositioning is common when front teeth are impacted and need to be repositioned so that they can erupt normally. Extraction is a last resort treatment method that involves the removal of impacted wisdom teeth that have started to decay. The last method of treating impaction is via open and closed forced eruption.

What Does Exposure of Impacted Teeth Involve?

After the Wisdom teeth, maxillary cuspid (upper eye tooth) are the second most common teeth to become impacted because they are the last of the “front” teeth to erupt into place. If your child has impacted teeth, we will surgically expose the teeth by cutting a small flap in gum. Once the tooth is exposed, it will emerge on its own. If the tooth does not erupt on its own, an orthodontist will place braces on the teeth to create space for the impacted teeth to erupt into. Once the space is wide enough, the oral surgeon will expose the tooth and attach an orthodontic bracket to guide the impacted tooth to erupt into place.

Throughout the entire process from the initial consultation, finance/payment, greeting/exit of each appointment, and of course the talented and genuine staff that treat your teeth each time,
We were in an emergent situation after a playground accident/trauma and within 10 mins of calling and upon arrival, we were greeted, evaluated, and treated immediately on our first visit.
